Terms and conditions

1. Who we are
UtilityBox is a prepaid electricity vending service operating in Nigeria, selling tokens for meters registered with Nigerian electricity distribution companies (DisCos). In these terms, "we", "us" and "UtilityBox" mean UtilityBox Ltd, a company registered in Nigeria with company number RC1280416, registered office CITEC Mount Pleasant, Abuja, Nigeria. "You" means the person buying a token.
2. What we do, and what we do not do
We are a vending intermediary. When you buy through UtilityBox we take your payment, pass a vend request to the DisCo that supplies your meter through our vending partner, and pass the token back to you.
We do not generate tokens and we do not supply electricity. The token is issued by your DisCo. The units it credits, the tariff applied, any debt or arrears recovered from your purchase, and the supply itself are all matters between you and your DisCo.
3. Your meter details are yours to check
Before you pay, we ask your DisCo to confirm the meter number and we show you the name and address registered against it. Check them. A token is issued to the meter number sent to the DisCo, and once issued it credits that meter and cannot be moved to another one.
We are not responsible for a token vended correctly to a meter number you entered incorrectly and confirmed.
4. Price and charges
The amount you pay is shown in full before you confirm, broken down into the value going to your meter and any service or payment processing charge. There are no charges beyond those shown on that screen.
Minimum and maximum purchase amounts are set by each DisCo, not by us, and can change without notice to us. Any service charge is shown to you on the payment screen before you pay, and you are never charged an amount you have not seen.
5. Payment
Payments are processed by our payment provider. Card and bank details are entered in the provider's own secure payment window. UtilityBox never sees, handles or stores your card number.
6. Delivery of your token, and when a DisCo is slow
In most cases the token appears on screen within minutes and is emailed to you. Sometimes it is not, and you should know how that works.
A DisCo can accept a vend request and hold it as pending before issuing the token. When that happens your payment has succeeded and the token is still owed to you. We continue to query the DisCo and send the token as soon as it is released.
A delayed token is not a lost token, and it is not a reason to pay again. Paying a second time buys a second token. If you have paid and not received a token, contact support with your meter number and the time of the purchase rather than repeating the payment.
7. If something goes wrong
If your payment succeeded and no token is ever issued by the DisCo, you are entitled to a full refund of that purchase, returned to the account you paid from.
A token that has been issued cannot be cancelled, reversed or refunded, because the credit has already been applied to the meter by the DisCo.
8. Your account
You may buy without an account. If you create one, keep your password to yourself and tell us promptly if you think someone else has used it. You are responsible for purchases made through your account.
You may close your account at any time. We keep transaction records after closure where we are required to — see our privacy policy for how long and why.
9. Acceptable use
Do not use the service to launder money, to buy tokens with a payment instrument that is not yours, or to attack, probe or overload the service. We may refuse or reverse a transaction, and suspend an account, where we reasonably suspect fraud or unlawful use.
10. Availability
We aim to be available at all hours but we depend on DisCos, our vending partner and our payment provider, all of which have outages we do not control. We do not guarantee uninterrupted service and we are not liable for losses caused by a DisCo or payment provider being unavailable.
11. Our liability
Our responsibility is to deliver the token you paid for, or to refund you if the DisCo never issues it. Beyond that, and to the extent Nigerian law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss — including loss arising from being without power.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, or for anything that cannot lawfully be limited.
12. Changes
We may update these terms. The version published here when you buy is the one that applies to that purchase, and the date at the top tells you when it last changed.
13. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and disputes are subject to the jurisdiction of the Nigerian courts.
14. Contact
